Iceland Viking monument, Reykjavik

The Sun Voyager (Sólfar in Icelandic) is a metal semi-abstract sculpture of a boat on the northern edge of Reykjavik.

I'd suggest sunset or sunrise, otherwise don't bother. I did it at both, and preferred the results at sunrise, though that might have just been luck with the weather.

Long exposure works well here, not least because even at sunrise you will encounter the odd tourist walking in and out of your frame and a very long exposure will get rid of them.

Expect lots of photographers for company, Iceland being the Mecca for photographers that it is today, even a sculpture that in other cities might be overlooked by photographers will get busy. Fortunately the photographers I encountered here were all very respectful of one another's compositions and didn't get in each other's way.

Try a perfectly symmetrical composition head on, and experiment with angles low to the ground - few people seem to try that composition. Also go for the classic shot slightly to the left.

Use a wide angle lens for a more dramatic composition.

You can park for free almost right next to this sculpture, at least at sunrise / sunset time.
