Iconics black basalt sea stacks, located on a black sand beach near Vík í Mýrdal, South Coast of Iceland.
Very famous place near the circular road n°1, which could be very crowded during the high season. Beautiful shoreline with great wildlife around.

Photography Tips

Patience is the best tip for this spot I can offer you if you go there during the daytime in the high season (June-August). If you want to shoot a picture without people everywhere with flashy jackets, or someone else trying to climb the huge basalt rock on the beach for a perfect portrait, you have to grin and bear it ;) like everywhere, sunrise or sunset is the best time to capture great light and colours, but hoping to be alone on the beach is one more argument. I guess the winter season is calmer. Anyway, it's a place not to be missed.

Additional remark: as Manuel Becker mentioned: "this spot can be pretty dangerous if you don't pay attention to the level of the water. I heard that people died around here because they got caught by the water, which can get pretty high towards the cliffs of the beach during tide as far as I know."

Really nice shot Greg! I took one of the exact same place, but during the day because I had no other choice. Looks so much better during sunrise, good decision to get up for it. You probably should mention that this spot can be pretty dangerous if you don't pay attention to the level of the water. I heard that people died around here because they got caught by the water, which can get pretty high towards the cliffs of the beach during tide as far as I know.

Oh yes!! And usually I really don't like it to stand up early... but standing up after only 3 hours of sleep on Iceland?! Well, no problem... ;-)
