Iceland Highland Base at Kerlingarfjöll
The Kerlingarfjoll area is one of the most incredible in the Icelandic Highlands after a long drive (which is doable with a 4x4 car without expert knowledge and no river crossings). Park your car at the marked parking area and go for a hike in the area. Make sure not to leave the trails due to geothermal activities. A base camp is a great place to stop by for food or to hang around and visit the nearby hot springs.
Photography Tips
The cabins are far away from the positon where I was taking the photo. I wanted to achieve compression of the mountain in the background and use a tele-zoom lens for that. You can also walk closer to use a different lens but don't interrupt the people who have booked them for the night to sleep.
Travel Information
You need a 4x4 car to get to this location since you must drive several dozen kilometers on a gravel road (F35 and F347) in the Icelandic highlands towards Highland Base at Kerlingarfjöll. I parked my car somewhere at the site of the road since I came in the early morning and nobody else was around. When traveling in Iceland, it is always nice to check www.safetravel.is for travel information since road conditions can change fast. The road is not accesable during winter.
