This spot is a spectacular waterfall in a cave. From outside it is nearly invisible but when you go through the small stream into the cave, a beautiful waterfall shows up. The rush of the water is loud and the whole scenery is very impressive.

Addition: Gljúfrabúi (or Canyon Dweller) is a beautiful waterfall located at Hamragarðar in South Iceland, close to its better-known counterpart, Seljalandsfoss waterfall. To get to the waterfall at the base, you must walk inside a small gorge. Waterproof shoes and a rain jacket are a must.

Photography Tips

This spot is wet. You should take a cleaning rag with you and protection for your camera to cover it from water. Use a neutral density filter and a tripod to make a long exposure.

Addition: When entering the gorge to access the falls, you will need to hop a few rocks (or tread water). When doing this, you will NEED both hands accessible for safety purposes, so ensure any equipment is secured. Also, the area is extremely misty; make sure to protect any equipment from the water before entering, because you likely won't be able to do it while hopping the rocks. Better to get everything ready before heading in.

Travel Information

You can park your car at the parking space in front of the Seljalandsfoss waterfall and walk over to the Gljufrafoss. It takes about 15 minutes to get there.

Addition: Official parking is at Seljalandsfoss, located about a mile south of this location. There is a well-manicured path connecting the two falls, and it features many other smaller falls along the way. It's well worth the walk, but the alternative is parking near 63.620571, -19.990890 (limited; may not be available).

This spot has massively gained in popularity. I heard scary stories about trapped tourists that were not able to leave the cold and wet gorge, because too many people were trying to enter at the same time (it's a 20 meter one-way trail). When I visited in Oct 2024 in the evening, it was also busy. Try to come early in the morning or evening.

This was one of my favorite stops in Iceland. Put on your waterproof shoes, and GO HERE! Highly recommend walking over from Seljalandsfoss.

Such a great place! In some way I liked this spot even more than the typical Seljalandsfoss, which was full of tourists. This one is not that well know to all visitors, so it's definitely worth the few minutes of walk to get there.
