Iceland Solheimasandur Plance Wreck from the front
The DC-3 wreck site at Sólheimasandur is one of Iceland’s most eerie and fascinating landmarks. In 1973, a U.S. Navy Douglas DC-3 plane crashed on the black sand beach after running out of fuel. Miraculously, all crew members survived, but the plane was abandoned. Over the years, the skeleton of the plane has become a popular photography spot, standing starkly against the vast, desolate landscape. The wreck is accessible via a 4 km walk from the main road, adding an element of adventure for those who visit the remote site.
Photography Tips
To photograph the DC-3 wreck, use a wide-angle lens to capture both the plane and its dramatic surroundings. Shoot from different angles to emphasize the contrast between the wreck and the vast black sand. For a more atmospheric shot, try capturing it during sunrise or sunset, when the soft light enhances the scene's mood. You can also experiment with close-up shots of the plane’s details, such as the rusting metal or broken windows. A low angle can make the plane appear more imposing against the expansive landscape.
Travel Information
To reach the DC-3 wreck site at Sólheimasandur, drive along the Ring Road (Route 1) from Reykjavík towards Vík. Just past the Sólheimasandur sign, turn off onto a gravel road and park in the designated lot. From there, it’s a 4 km walk across the black sand desert to the wreck. Be prepared for wind and varying weather conditions, as the area is exposed and remote. The walk typically takes about 45 minutes each way.
