Iceland Háifoss Waterfall

One of the greatest waterfalls I´ve ever seen. Located near the golden circle in the south of Iceland. The hike was quite an adventure. First, we had to cross a small river by car, then left the car behind because the road was closed and walked for nearly 2 hours to the top of the canyon and another 45 min down. But the final view is breathtaking. Definitely worth a visit.
The Osm map under this post shows the trail (red dots) down into the canyon. But watch your step at some points it's very steep and slippery.

Photography Tips

For photography, it's definitely recommended to have ND filters with you. This will give you the possibility to soften the water, which is a great contrast to the extremely sharp and edgy stones around Haifoss. There are quite a lot of different perspectives up there you may try.

Travel Information

Walking to the Háifoss Waterfall from the car park (see directions below) was pretty easy, but I’d say that the drive to get here was a lot harder. Be careful because it could be slippery when wet. The canyon is very deep en you won't survive the fall!

Regarding the hike from the car park, we took an easy-to-follow trail that went gently downhill to the various cliff-edge viewpoints of both Háifoss and Granni.

Back on our first visit in 2007, we walked about 500m from the car park to a viewpoint where it was easy to see and photograph both Háifoss and Granni together.

When we came back in 2021, it appeared that an additional spur trail (as well as some signage) was added about 200m from the car park for a more direct cliff-edge view of both waterfalls.

Awesome that you walked down there. We didn't have the time to do that. You just walked from the spot up there along the canyon down there and at some point it was plain enough to get to the level of the river?

Thanks, there is a trail down already. I met two other and they showed me the way down. but at some point it was snowy and slippery and the way up is kinda steep.

Yeah I would guess so that the way down there is steep. It's around 180m in height difference I think. Could you please add a short description above the map? I am not sure what exactly this means ;-)
