Rana Veer Singh and his wife, Queen Rudabai, started building this step well as a much-needed water source for their people in the 1400s. Before it was completed, Rana Veer Singh died in battle. Mehmud Begada took over the throne and so the stepwell could not be finished. Normally, the Queen would have performed self-immolation and joined her husband in the afterlife but Mehmud Begada forbade it, insisting that she should marry him instead. The Queen agreed in the condition that he complete the construction of the stepwell, which he did. But instead of honouring the deal, the Queen threw herself into the stepwell, joining her late husband in the afterlife.
It consists of five levels that have been made entirely of sandstone, showing a mix of Islamic, Hindu and Jain influence and is considered to be one of the finest examples of Indian craftsmanship surviving from that period.
