Hawa Mahal facade. Otherwise known as the Palace of the Winds, the 15 metre high Hawa Mahal was constructed in 1799 in red and pink sandstone. what you see is actually a screen wall built so the women of the royal household could observe street festivals from any of the 953 windows (who's counting anyway?) while remaining unseen from the outside.

The entrance door leads to a courtyard surrounded by two-storey buildings on three sides. Unlike the exterior, the interior is stark with plain passages and columns reaching to the top storey. There are no stairs. The upper floors are accessed by ramps.

Photography Tips

Take a tripod with you.
It's worth visiting in the morning and in the evening; the light changes a lot.
To take this picture you have to go to the opposite building. Just ask on the street and you will be led to the roof. Of course, as everywhere in India, a small tip is expected.
