Italy The ancient theatre of Taormina
From the upper tribunes this place offers a great view through the ruins of the theatre up to Mt. Etna
Photography Tips
The gates open at 9:00 and there seems to be no way of getting in earlier. In July, the sky was reasonably clear through to Etna but I suspect that earlier might have show it clearer. At that time of the morning, its easier to get shots that are not littered with tourists, if that is the kind of shot you want.
Lens-wise, the shot I tried for the whole amphitheater is 16 mm but a standard 24-105 is generally adequate.
Looking at Hans-Peter's images, I'd say Winter might be a better season than full summer if you want spectacular shots with snow on Etna.

Travel Information
it's no problem to get there by walking a few minutes from the city centre or from the bus station. Don't even try driving in Taormina unless you're a local - streets are narrow, turns are tight and there are one-way roads to add to the fun. And its crowded with tourists in high season. Fortunately, the distances are short and walking is easy.
