This photo was taken on the bridge "Ponte alla Carraia" in Florence, Italy facing West just after the sun had set behind the horizon. Ponte all Carraia spans the Arno River which slowly flows through the city.

Photography Tips

Wait for the golden hour to begin shooting and make sure to face West. The sky will become very beautiful. The river was flowing slowly, so a medium shutter speed yielded a nice reflection of the buildings in the water which was not too blurry.

I took 3 bracketed photos to create an HDR image. The final image was created with the EasyHDR program. The details of the nominally exposed photo are below...
Camera: Nikon D7200
Lens: Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8
Shutter Speed: 6 secs.
Aperture: f/14
ISO: 100
Focal Length: 18mm on a Nikon crop sensor. So about 27mm full frame.

Use a higher aperture value to create the star bursts around the lights. Make sure to use a tripod for longer exposures. Also consider to apply a CPL filter or ND as needed.

Travel Information

Super easy to get to this spot. Take a train to Florence, Italy (Firenze S. M. Novella). The spot on Ponte alla Carraia is about 1/2 mile walk (0.8 km).

For reference, two bridges to the East is the famous Ponte Vecchio.

Driving in Florence can be tough (I would imagine).

You are correct - very very lucky. The water had slowed at just that moment to make the building reflection appear perfect. Earlier photos with a faster current "bend" the reflection of the buildings. It was indeed a truly remarkable opportunity to capture this sunset in Florence.
