A taste of Tibetan landscape on this vast and unspoiled plateau situated at 1800 meters above sea level, at the end of it the Gran Sasso peak towering at 2.912 m, all of this at just a couple of hours driving from Rome. One of the best natural landscapes Italy has to offer, this national park was the legendary location of many spaghetti western.

Photography Tips

Every season it turns to a total different place. Explore the area, it has different easy climbing hills that overlook the area, one nice canyon, 3 cool ancient villages where to sleep, the castle of Rocca Calascio where the movie ladyhawke was staged, 2 huts residue of some spaghetti western movie sets which have been later converted into butcher shops where to buy and BBQ on place.

Travel Information

Get a car, the drives around the national park are to panoramic not to be driven, from Rome get the Highway A24 to Assergi then follow for Campo Imperatore, anyhow L'Aquila is the main city you must reach if you travel by train.

Hi Ronald, yes sure, i've been in Abruzzo several time and this is the panoramic road map I've made; https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?hl=it&mid=1UnSFRGhxFw_JlK39YRB8Gjj9OpcWZo4H&ll=42.27506642200673%2C13.833575117504097&z=10 In there you'll find the best places, remember the gran sasso peak gets covered with cloud very often along the day so be there early and, local cousine is mainly based on grilled goat, cheese and red wine, stay well off the cities, abruzzo has some of the best ancient villages of italy, just stay there, pescocostanzo, pacentro and santo stefano di sessanio are my favourite, have fun and watch out the abruzzese shepherd dogs, they are really jealous of their sheeps.

Ciao Francesco, grazie mille per le molte informazioni! We will stay in Roseto degli Abruzze this summer so visiting some of the spots from your trips seems easy to do. Thanks again and if you are going to visit the Abruzze this year or another time you must try some arrosticini, mi piace molto buono. Maybe we meet some time, ciao Ronald
