Italy Italian Lapland
Campo Imperatore plateau is situated at 1800 meters above sea level, due to his vast open space it has been the legendary location of many spaghetti western, but each season gives a total different face to this place ( this pic was taken in April ) all of this at just a couple of hours driving from Rome. One of the best natural landscapes Italy has to offer.
Photography Tips
The king of the area is the Gran Sasso peak towering over the plateau at 2.912 m, but also many easy climbing hills that overlook the area, one nice canyon, 3 cool ancient villages where to sleep, the castle of Rocca Calascio where the movie ladyhawke was staged, 2 huts residue of some spaghetti western movie sets which have been later converted into butcher shops where to buy and BBQ on place.
Travel Information
Get a car, the drives around the national park are to panoramic not to be driven, from Rome get the Highway A24 to Assergi then follow for Campo Imperatore, anyhow L'Aquila is the main city you must reach if you travel by train.
