Not for nothing is this place a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s one of those wonderful hill towns that has to be explored on foot. It was two separate towns until quite recently: the old original site of the town before the earthquake that destroyed a lot of nearby towns in the 1600s, The top of the hill was the area where the wealthier citizens re-established themselves rather than deal with the rubble.

The town is said to have 2 Michelin-starred restaurants but I wasn’t able to even try for one.

Photography Tips

Tripod, telephoto and watch for cars.

Travel Information

To get the blue dome of Chiesa di Santa Maria dell'Itria in the foreground, you need to be up the hill. I walked up the path between the houses until I found a road. A short walk and there it was.
Realising there was a road, I went back for the car and my wife so we could drive up. I don’t recall the names of the roads we took but Google Maps made it easy. There is a small church further up the hill if you want more greenery in your shot.
