Riomaggiore:
1,700 inhabitants, the easternmost of the five villages. A lively wide lane leads steeply down from the parking garage in the upper town to the small harbor. If you come from the train station (in the lower town) there is also a lift (Ascensore) up to the upper town. Worth seeing: the remains of the Genoese castle in the upper town with a beautiful panoramic view and the church of San Giovanni Battista a few steps further on from the 14th century.

Vernazza:
950 inhabitants, undoubtedly the most beautiful of the five villages (see photo above). On the wide main street between the station (halfway in a tunnel) and the harbor plaza, the city's now tourism-driven life takes place. In 2011, the city was devastated by a tsunami-like tidal wave, a large billboard near the station reminds with impressive photos of this disaster. Worth seeing: the church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia from the 14th century with its massive 40 meter high church tower (at the harbor plaza).

Photography Tips

Very worthwhile is the photographing in the morning
and in the evening (at the blue hour).
