Italy Tower of Pisa
The Tower of Pisa is a famous leaning tower located in the city of Pisa, Italy. It was built as a campanile (bell tower) for the nearby Duomo Cathedral in the 12th century. The tower stands at over 56 meters tall and started to lean during construction due to the soft ground. The lean worsened over time and became a major concern in the 20th century. In 1990, a massive restoration project was undertaken to stabilize the tower and decrease its lean by 17 inches (43 centimeters). Today, the Tower of Pisa is a popular tourist attraction and one of the most recognizable landmarks in Italy.
