Italy Matera - Cathedral
By design, the cathedral dominates Matera from both a navigation and photographic perspective. It was built for Emperor Frederick II of Swabia with work completing in the late 13th century. The most recent restoration was done this century and it was re-opened in 2016.
There are large fragments of stucco painting from the early 1600s and even a nativity scene dating from the 16th century.

Photography Tips
Working quietly, even with a tripod, seems to be tolerated here. It avoids work later to remove noise that many cameras introduce with ISO ratings high enough for hand holding.
Travel Information
It is possible to get to the area from the centre with a small car but the walk up provides some good views over the sassi.
