Eihei-ji, the older of the two head temples of Soto zen buddhism, is a bit off the beaten paths. Founded in 1243 AD, the temple has quite prospered and has grown into a lovely temple complex.

Despite its remote location the temple is very well visited even on weekdays.

Photography Tips

Eihei-ji buildings are staggered on a steep hillslope. Wide angle lenses are recommended.

Travel Information

The temple can be reached by local train from Fukui to Eiheijiguchi station, continuing by Keifuku bus. There is also a faster bus service (Eiheiji Liner) starting at Fukui station.

As Eihei-ji is located near the end of a narrow valley, parking is quite difficult.
