These curious sika deer (Cervus nippon), sacred in Japanese culture, are housed near Kashima-Jingu Shrine. The shrine, located in Ibaraki Prefecture, is a historic spiritual site dedicated to Takemikazuchi, the god of martial arts. The deer, known as "shika" (鹿), are considered messengers of the gods and are a key part of the shrine’s serene and spiritual atmosphere. Visiting this shrine offers not only a glimpse into Japan’s ancient traditions but also a chance to connect with these gentle creatures, who embody the harmony between nature and spirituality.
