The Wat Xieng Thong in Luang Prabang is undoubtedly the most beautiful temple. In addition, the Golden City Monastery, as Wat Xieng Thong is also called, is considered by Lao people to be the most important symbol of their country's religious heritage. The complex is known for the beautiful coloured glass mosaics on some of its main buildings. These mosaics include scenes from Buddhist texts of the Lao people's daily lives.

Wat Xieng Thong is the oldest monastery in the city. It was built in 1560 and the temple was under royal protection until 1975. Several Lao kings were crowned there.
The Wat is one of the few shrines that has survived the many lootings of the city.

The temple stands on the peninsula in Luang Prabang, where the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers meet.
