Word on the street is that during colonial times the waters of the San Francisco (St. Francis) river overflowed frequently, flooding the alleyway at Calle 6 Sur (6th Street South). The people took advantage of the river’s growth and so they installed a series of watermills in the alley. Nevertheless, the water used to stagnate and the activities that were done in it attracted a great deal of toads, which gave it its name of Callejon de los Sapos (The Toad’s Alleyway).

Starting at 10 am every Sunday, one can find several articles in the market of the Callejon de los Sapos. The items that predominate are antiques, arts and crafts, and collections of coins, paper currency, and medals. It’s a traditional site to tour when visiting the city of Puebla. During Fridays and Saturdays at night, the alleyway is full of music that can be enjoyed from a café or a bar.
