Myanmar Kyaiktiyo Pagoda
The Golden Rock in Myanmar is located on a mountain near the small town of Kyaikto in Mon State. It is a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists and also an important tourist destination.
According to legend, the rock is held in balance by only two hairs of Buddha, so that it does not fall down. On the rock there is a stupa, the 5.5 meter long Kyaiktiyo Pagoda. Under the pagoda is said to be the hair, which is protected by a reliquary. The rock has a coating of gold leaf. The pilgrims bring gold leaf with them, which they stick to the holy rock. It is gold-plated up to a height of about two metres. Women are not allowed to touch the sanctuary.
