The Shwedagon Pagoda is the most important sacred building and the religious center of Myanmar in Rangoon. It is considered the landmark of the whole country and is one of the most famous stupas in the world as well as one of the most important religious sites of Buddhism worldwide and therefore one of the most famous sights in all of Myanmar. Many tons of gold and other treasures are hidden inside it. Some describe the Shwedagon as the most beautiful pagoda in the world.
The pagoda may only be entered barefoot, shoes must be taken off before entering.
