This is a UNESCO World Heritage site with one of the largest concentrations of petroglyphs, i.e. rock engravings in Africa. The landscape itself is amazing, incredibly arid, with rocks carved into incredible formations by the wind over millenia. It's a place that feels like you went back in time 10,000 years.

Photography Tips

Access is controlled, you can't just turn up and wander unescorted due to people damaging the carvings. There is shaded car parking and a small visitor centre where you will be assigned a guide (for a small fee). But the guides are brilliant, there are route options you can walk, some scrambling involved but you don't need great fitness. It is however searingly hot year round! Go early in the morning if you can (I believe open from 8am)

Travel Information

Getting there is an adventure all its own, this is a remote location! There are a couple of (pricey) camps to stay within 10km of the site, but the drive from the nearest town (Khorixas) takes about 90 mins and is a stunning route in itself. Be aware the C39 and D2612 roads from Khorixas are gravel and the last part (D3254/3214) is sand!
