Namibia Fish River Canyon, Namib
In the far south, south of Keetmanshoop is Africa's deepest canyon. After the Grand Canyon, the Fish River Canyon is the largest canyon in Africa with a length of 160 kilometres and the second largest canyon in the world. Its depth ranges between 457 and 549 metres, and its width is up to 27 kilometres.
The view into the canyon is spectacular.
During the African summer months, the hike through the canyon is closed due to the heat. The Fish River Hiking Trail can be done from April to September and can be completed within 4 to 5 days depending on fitness. It covers a distance of 85 km and the descent into the canyon is only allowed for hikers who make the trail. Day visitors are not allowed to climb into the canyon.
