New Zealand Hokitika Gorge
The top spot in Hokitika and absolutely beautiful as the very blue waters come off of the glaciers of the mountains to the east. These colors are real. I apologize if this site is already on but this composition gives the classic shot.
Photography Tips
Arrive early as this is a very popular spot! At sunrise the sun will come off of your left shoulder and illuminate the scene nicely as it rises. Remember to use your polarizer for the skies and greens. The sandflies are wicked so use some DEET in the carpark.
Travel Information
Hokitika Gorge Scenic Reserve is 33 km east of Hokitika. Leave Hokitika's main road by turning inland onto Stafford St which become Kaniere Rd, then Kaniere-Kowhitirangi Rd. South of Kokatahi the road turns sharp left, then sharp right. Turn left into Johnston Rd, right into Nielson Rd, and left into Whitcombe Valley Rd. There is a large carpark with toilet. You will need to walk about 10 minutes to the site. It rquires crossing a shaky suspension bridge which you will not like if you are afraid of heights. The classic shot is from the viewing platform though other opportunities are possible by scrambling down the rocks nearer to the river. Do NOT fall in!
