New Zealand Mackinnon Pass, Milford Track

Mackinnon Pass offers spectacular views of the valley to both sides of the pass as well as the mountains surrounding the upper ends of the valleys.

If the weather is fine on the pass when you reach Mintaro Hut on the second day of the walk, consider walking up to the pass with just your photo gear plus water and a snack, leaving the rest of your luggage behind. You will come back in the morning, but the weather may change completely over night. Be prepared for heavy rainfalls and take care of good protection for your gear.

Mackinnon Pass can only be visited when walking the complete Milford Track which takes 3 1/2 days. The start of Milford track is basically only accessible by boat from Te Anau Downs which can be reached either by car or by bus from Te Anau. Booking the trip and track is essential.
