New Zealand View from Mount Maunganui
Mauao, more commonly known as Mount Maunganui, is the major geographical landmark of the Bay of Plenty area in NZ. This spot is at the peak of 'The Mount', which is a 20-30 minute walk from the base, and gives beautiful views across the sweeping coast and Pacific Ocean. It is a popular spot, with many making the pilgrimage up for sunrise, sunset, and throughout the day.
Photography Tips
There are several spots on the way up The Mount that you can get good shots. Sunrise, shooting down the coastline, probably offers the best opportunities. Arrive 20 minutes before the sunrise, find your spot, and enjoy the view.
Travel Information
From the northern end of the town/beach there are a couple of paths up to the peak. The paths are well formed but gravel so good shoes are advisable, especially as some of the better photo spots at the top are on slightly precarious ledges. Mt Maunganui is approximately 2.5 hours drive from Auckland.
