New Zealand Tarawera Falls
The Tarawera Falls are located 3 km northeast of Lake Tarawera on the northern island of New Zealand. They originate from a rock face to which the Tarawera River runs underground and plunges up to 65 m from different rock openings.
Due to all the stones in the river, this waterfall offers some great compositions for photographers.

Photography Tips
Using stones as a foreground element, even when not in focus, can help to direct the eye of the viewer towards the waterfall itself.
Travel Information
The hiking trail to Tarawera Falls is only accessible via gravel roads from Kawerau in the northeast and via Rotorua in the west, whereby the route from Kawerau via Waterfall Road is by far the more convenient connection. The road has a parking lot towards the end, from which the falls can be reached in a good 20 minutes via a 700m hiking trail.
