For Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Mount Sunday was the location for Edoras, the capital of Rohan, home of the horse lords. In reality, there isn’t much there except a “Trig station” used by land surveyors, surrounded by wide open spaces and a few salmon streams.
There are no remnant pieces of film set to be seen,

Photography Tips

This place is about big landscapes but a standard lens will probably serve you well.
In Winter, the views include plenty of snow-capped mountains but the wind is chilly. In Summer, its hot and still windy to the point where I had to weight my tripod for stability.

Travel Information

It’s a long drive over unmade roads to the car park from where you set out on foot for approximately 1.5 Kms. There are plenty of coaches from places like Christchurch and, frankly, these are a viable option; you’re unlikely to want to stay longer than the time agreed with the tour company and you probably won’t want to stop to shot photos on the way.
