Oman Mighty Wahiba Sands, Oman
The Wahiba Sands is a red sand desert in the north east of Oman and is absolutely phantastic, not even for photography, rather than for dune bashing, crossing with an ATV or with your own car.
Photography Tips
Any lens and camera will work, but sunsets and sunrises are spectacular. Maybe use a polarizer.
Be very carefull of your equipment. Heavy sandstorms appear suddenly and may destroy your gear.

Travel Information
Coming from Ibra/Sur direction there are several entrances, which will lead you into the desert. Never go alone, better be with at least 2 or 3 cars or with a guide. No way without a strong 4x4 and a driver with a bit of skill (we outperformed a Land Rover Defender with our 4x4 Sprinter ;) )
After a few kilometers on a flat surface it suddenly starts to get really sandy.
If your car isn't that strong (like our Van), deflate the tires down to 0.8-1.0 bar which gives you way better performance and grip. (Do not forget a compressor). If you'll get stuck: never put the pedal to the metal, rather than set back immediately for a couple of meters and start again. There are hundreds of tracks leading through the desert, it's up to you, which one you feel comfortable with. We have been able to drive into the Sands for 30km. After that it got so sandy, that we weren't able to go further.
