Peru Ruins of Choquequirao (Hill)
The Incas of the Vilcabamba Valley sought refuge in Choquequirao after the arrival of the Spanish, in a last-ditch effort to regain power. Its name means “Cradle of Gold,” and its beauty and grandeur have been compared to Machu Picchu. Altitude 3085 m.
Photography Tips
You have to travel light. I recommend only a trans-standard zoom and for the brave, a wide angle.
Travel Information
From Cusco, with public transportation to Cachora and from there, with taxis or individual transportation to Wasi camp where the trekking begins. It is not easy to get to Choquequirao: it is a 4 or 5-day hike (round trip) spending the night in lodges or camping. The trail is good but tiring since you have to descend 1,500 meters to the Apurimac River and climb the same slope on the other side.
