Livraria Lello is a well-known bookstore in Porto. It dates back to the 1860s although the name and ownership have changed over the years. It is said to have inspired J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series; she taught English in Porto for several years.

It has been rated as the third finest book store in the world (so where are the other two?). At its heart is the spectacular stairway but there are other photographic attractions too.

Photography Tips

This store is always busy. Well worth the 5 euro (deductible if you buy there), however the crowd is unbearable. I arrived 20 mins before opening and there was a line going around the corner. There are separate queues: one to buy tickets and another to get in when someone already-in leaves.

The only way to get uncluttered shots is to make an appointment for after-hours. I asked at the till and was given an email address but I ran out of time in Porto.

Also, you might find that night time is better; as you'll see, the strong sunlight from the front of the shop can be a problem.

So well captured, Herbert. What lens did you use?

Well done! you managed to get the shot free of people :-) as to the Eur.5, if you buy a book you will be reimbursed but anyway do not miss the second floor. Hang on in there if you are a die-hard like me, that fraction of a second free of people will come eventually so be ready.

Thank you Alona! I had many ideas for getting multiple captures here. I was not anticipating the, what seemed to be a nonstop wave of visitors. My hat is off to you for your ability of being so concentrated. After two and a half hours, my focus was overwhelmed :-)

Lol, I know what you mean, and standing in the queue for such a long time, I thought to myself: I am not going to leave this place without a decent shot or two. The amount of people they let in at a time is indeed madness :-) mind you at the end of the second floor there seem to be a coffee shop, I did not notice that at the time, only once I post produced the photos.
