It's an amazing place to watch all the lagoons from the Seven Cities craters and probably one of the best viewpoints on São Miguel Island. The view over Lagoa de Santiago, Lagoa das Sete Cidades, and Lagoa Rasa is simply fabulous.
The access is of great beauty, via a pedestrianized path that runs alongside Lagoa do Canário.

Photography Tips

The best time to photograph is at sunset and in the blue hour that follows.
For this reason, you should bring a torch, as the path has no public lighting.

Travel Information

Park your car at the marked position and walk around 10-15 minutes to the actual spot. You might be able to park even closer to the spot but usually, the street to it is closed and you won't be able to get close by directly by car. The walk is quite easy and nice.

Hey David, could you please check the spot again? It's marked in the woods and I am pretty sure that you can't photograph the lakes from there. But I am also not sure if this photo was taken from the typical viewpoint or not so I didn't want to merge it immediately. Thank you for a short feedback :-) Manuel

You are right - the spot I took it from is not quite where it is indicated on the map. According to my map of Sao Miguel, the photo spot should be due north of the middle bend of the "wiggles" on the R8-1A road, and due east of Lagoa Rasa, the small lake (unnamed on your map) between Lagoa Verde and Lagoa de Santiago. This takes it out of the wooded area and onto a ridge between two wooded areas. This is not the usual viewpoint, which is at the end of the R8-1A road and from where you get the classic view of both the Green and Blue Lakes. (The road on the left of the photo is the road curving around the north shore of Lagoa de Santiago, which is out of shot to the left.) Hope this helps - David

Hey David, so nice of you that you checked again, thank you. Just want to be sure that nobody suddenly stands in the middle of nowhere and searches for a spot like that ;-) Could you please just edit the spot? Since it's your spot you can click on the 3 dots behind the bookmark button and then "Edit Spot" to set the correct position for this one. Thank you very much dear David, really appreciate it!

You are awesome, thank you. You now marked the classic viewpoint at the end of the path up there. Is that correct? I would merge this spot then with the one that is existing already.

Yes, that sounds right (the viewpoint was at the end of the path).
