The Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones) is a small interior chapel built within the Church of St Francis in Evora. The walls are lined with human skulls and bones.

A 16th century Franciscan monk wanted to convey the message that life is transitory. This is summed up by the warning over the entrance, "We bones that are here, for yours await."

There are approximately 5000 skeletons of monks in the chapel.

Photography Tips

A flash is necessary if you wish to capture the dimmer parts of the chapel although sections of the wall are floodlit.
