Portugal View of Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande
The Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande hot springs are located in the interior of the island of São Miguel and were built in the 19th century. They are located in a valley crossed by a stream and surrounded by vegetation populated by species typical of the Laurissilva forests.
They are a group of buildings that are lined up by a road that crosses it and by others scattered around, located on the closest slopes.
This is where you will find the oldest bath – made of stone and belonging, at the time, to a house of the Moreira family – dating back to 1803, later integrated into the building of the Crown Baths, built in 1811.
At the highest point there is a chapel that was once surrounded by a churchyard, a place from which you can enjoy a privileged view over the thermal complex. It pays homage to Our Lady of Health.
In this location – a present testimony to volcanic activity – is the Caldeiras restaurant and in the surrounding area there are outdoor grills for family barbecues. In the surrounding area there are also nine holes available for making stews.
