Portugal Hydrangeas in the Azores
This shrub, originally from Japan, is found on all the islands of the Azores. Its blue and white flowering hedges form a typical element of the landscape of some of the islands, to the point that this species has been used as a tourist attraction. It was probably introduced in the mid-19th century. Its flowers, which are very attractive and abundant, give this species great ornamental value. It is also traditionally used as a hedge, to divide up land. It is therefore no surprise that one of the main agents of this weed's spread has been man. However, thanks to its competitive ability, reproducing by seed and vegetatively, it often escapes by colonizing pastures, ravines and craters where the natural vegetation has been disturbed.
