Portugal Green area surrounding 'Lagoa do Fogo'
Lagoa do Fogo, one of the most impressive natural phenomena in São Miguel, is a true spectacle for the eyes. Located in the center of the island, this lagoon is one of the points of greatest tourist interest, not only for its natural beauty but also for its rich history and cultural significance. The name Lagoa do Fogo dates back to volcanic eruptions that occurred thousands of years ago, creating the caldera where the lagoon is today.
Lagoa do Fogo is known for its intense turquoise waters and the lush green slopes that surround it, forming a stunning visual contrast that appears untouched by man.
This lagoon, one of the largest in the Azores, is an integral part of the Natura 2000 Network, as it has been classified as a special conservation zone. Considered the highest in São Miguel, it is located at the top of the large Fogo volcano, also known as the Água de Pau volcano, at 575 meters. The maximum depth reached in this lagoon is 30 meters.
For starters, nature trails are a great way to explore the area. There are several walking routes for those who want to get to know this area, such as the walk to the lake, the walk from the south coast and the trail that takes you to Lombadas, one of the most untouched parts of the island.
The viewpoints are another highlight of the visit to Lagoa do Fogo. The Mirante da Lagoa do Fogo offers a view of the lagoon and is the perfect place to take memorable photos. The natural beauty of this place is so impressive that it becomes one of the most photographed spots on the island. The Barrosa Viewpoint is the first on the Ponta Delgada side. From there it is possible to see the north and south coasts of the island of São Miguel and the Lagoa.
