This garden was built in the 18th century by James Gordon, who also laid out the garden. In 1899, the estate was bought by the banker Rocha Machado, who offered temporary residence to Emperor Charles I of Austria and his family in 1921. Today, the estate belongs to the government. From this garden, you also have a magnificent view of Funchal.
