South Africa The Iconic Three Rondavels Viewpoint

During my visit to the Three Rondavels Viewpoint, I utilised my Tamron 17-28mm wide-angle lens mounted on a lightweight tripod to capture this expansive ultra-wide panoramic image. By taking multiple overlapping shots, I was able to seamlessly stitch together the entire breathtaking landscape in one cohesive frame. To enhance the clarity and vibrancy of the scene, I employed a circular polarizing (CPL) filter to reduce harsh daytime reflections, bringing out richer colours and deeper contrasts in the lush greenery and rugged canyon terrain.

Photography Tips

Golden Hours: Capture the Three Rondavels during the early morning or late afternoon when the sunlight bathes the formations in warm hues, enhancing their textures and casting dramatic shadows.

Panoramic Shots: Utilise a wide-angle lens to encompass the vastness of the canyon and the trio of peaks, conveying the grandeur of the landscape.

Foreground Elements: Incorporate natural elements like flora or the canyon's edge in the foreground to add depth and context to your compositions.

Weather Considerations: Clear days offer the best visibility, but don't shy away from capturing the moody atmosphere that mist or clouds can provide, adding a mystical quality to your images.

Travel Information

Location and Access

Conveniently located just 2 km off the R532 road, approximately 15 km north of the famous Bourke's Luck Potholes, the viewpoint is easily accessible by car. The route forms part of Mpumalanga's renowned Panorama Route, offering a scenic journey with lush landscapes and dramatic vistas accompanying travelers along the way. Nearby towns such as Graskop or Hoedspruit provide well-marked directions to the viewpoint, making the trip as rewarding as the destination itself.

Opening Hours and Entry Fees

The Three Rondavels Viewpoint is open daily from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Entry fees have increased since 2019, with the current rates set at R45 for South African residents and R90 for international visitors. It's advisable to carry cash for convenience, though checking for the latest prices before visiting is recommended.

Facilities and Amenities

Visitors will find a spacious parking area monitored by attendants, ensuring a safe and secure environment. A long row of curio stalls offers a chance to pick up unique souvenirs, while a coffee shop and café at the viewpoint provide refreshments for those looking to relax and soak in the scenery. Clean toilet facilities are also available on-site.

The Viewpoint Experience

A short, leisurely walk of about 70 to 80 meters along well-maintained paved footpaths leads to several vantage points overlooking the vast canyon below. Even on days with poor visibility, the views remain impressive, but the landscape truly comes alive when the skies are clear and blue. The midday and early afternoon sun provides ideal lighting, illuminating the canyon and the distant horizon in stunning detail.

Hiking Opportunities

For those keen on exploring the area further, the nearby Forever Blyde River Canyon Resort offers excellent hiking opportunities. With an entry fee of R150 per person, hikers can access several trails, including the renowned Leopard Trail. This trail provides breathtaking views of the inner canyon and the Three Rondavels from a unique vantage point located several kilometers north. It's an ideal option for those looking to experience the natural beauty of the region from a different perspective.
