Spain Artenara
Set on a giant natural balcony surrounded by the rugged ridges and valleys of Gran Canaria's Biosphere Reserve, Artenara is the island's highest village. The surrounding landscape was described as a "petrified storm" by the Spanish writer Unamuno, and the view towards the striking Roque Nublo and Roque Bentaiga, once sacred to the island's pre-Hispanic population, is spectacular. Artenara is a peaceful mountain village that is perfect if you want to take a break from the island's hectic tourist spots and coastal towns.
