Sweden Along the path to Njupesskär Waterfall (and above), Fulufjället National Park

Fulufjället National Park is a virtually untouched nature area in the southern part of the mountain range. The mountain rises in the landscape as a plateau that has steep sides and is flat on top. No reindeer graze here, so the mountain heath is covered with a thick carpet of lichen.

The Njupeskär waterfall is one of the highest in Sweden, cascading a total of 93 metres with a free fall of 70 metres. For thousands of years the water has chiselled out a deep canyon. Most of the visitors come to see it. From the top of the falls, you have a fantastic view of the canyon and the landscape.

The national park was dedicated in 2002. It measures 38,500 hectares (385 square kilometres), two-thirds of which is bare mountain heights and heath.

Photography Tips

Two to me important and easy by a short hike reachable gems are of course the Njupesskär Waterfall and Old Tjikko (the world's oldest known tree - 9550 years old (2024)). From the Naturum there is a short hike directly to the waterfall, shortly before you reach the fall you can take a hike up to the top and visit Old Tjikko and be above the waterfall too. Bring a tripod to take photos of the fall with various exposure times and also to take panoramic shots from above.

Travel Information

Fulufjället nationalpark is located in the north west part of Dalarna county, around 150 kilometres from Mora and 60 kilometres from Idre.

I recommend to park near the Visitor Centre Naturum Fulufjället (near Mörkret), here you have some of the shorter trails available.

So many beautiful photos dear Joerg, thanks for sharing them with the community. Were all these taken at the very same spot? I am asking because the idea behind this platform is that a spot marks the exact geo-position (+- around 20 meters) where a photo was taken so that these spots are easy to find without searching for them. I would especially split the waterfall into a separate spot to make it a lot easier to find because that seems to be 15 minutes away from the marked spot. I hope this makes sense to you as well and let me know if you have any questions. I know it's a bit more effort but it makes sure that spots stay easy to find. :-)

All photos are taken on the way (and back) from the Naturum to the fall. And above the fall. Old Tjikko is not far if you are at the top of the fall. However, I understand your point and will follow, when creating new spots. If you are on location, the path is marked very well, you will not get lost or will have to search for the two spots.

That would be awesome, thank you, because this allows you to plan a lot better in advance if you have never been there and since others can add photos to an existing spot it will be almost impossible to decide what to include in this spot which is then the entire region. ;-) What if we at least rename it to something like "Along the path to Njupesskär Waterfall, Fulufjället National Park" so that the content of the spot is easier to understand?

Perfect, I also did it for the other national parks.
