Sweden Old Tjikko, Fulufjället National Park
From the Naturum there is a short hike directly to the waterfall, shortly before you reach the fall you can take a hike up to the top and visit Old Tjikko and be above the waterfall too. Follow the signs Old Tjikko and watch out for colour markings on rocks.
THE OLDEST TREE IN THE WORLD
Old Tjikko met the scientists Leif Kullman and Lisa Oberg and Lisas dog Tjikko in 2008. They were monitoring the tree line on the mountain. That means how high up on the mountain trees can grow.
Under Old Tjikko's branches they found old wood. They sent the wood on analysis and found out (by carbon-14 dating) that the wood was over 9500 years old! This is how long a spruce has been living here!
The tree you see today is around 400 years old. Can you see that there are two small siblings on the way up? Spruces can make more spruces by shooting new sprouts from the roots or from twigs that are close to the ground. Old Tjikko is a clone from the spruce that first started growing here right after the last ice age.
Fulufjället National Park is a virtually untouched nature area in the southern part of the mountain range. The mountain rises in the landscape as a plateau that has steep sides and is flat on top. No reindeer graze here, so the mountain heath is covered with a thick carpet of lichen.
The Njupeskär waterfall is one of the highest in Sweden, cascading a total of 93 metres with a free fall of 70 metres. For thousands of years the water has chiselled out a deep canyon. Most of the visitors come to see it. From the top of the falls, you have a fantastic view of the canyon and the landscape.
The national park was dedicated in 2002. It measures 38,500 hectares (385 square kilometres), two-thirds of which is bare mountain heights and heath.

Photography Tips
The old tree is fenced, try various angles and focal length, use wide open aperture to blur the fence. Take panoramic view shots from the surrounding area. A tripod is beneficial but be alerted the plateau is catching wind gusts.
