This is the most iconic and famous spot to photograph the famous Matterhorn Mountain (I call it Toblerone Mountain).
Every Landscape Photographer in Switzerland has one of these iconic shots (I think). The Nature in location is just glory and you can see the potential of Switzerland's beauty…

Photography Tips

Stellisee is the best one for getting a nice picture of the Matterhorn.
Sleep in a nearby alpine hut to be at the lake in time for sunset/sunrise. Or you go there during sunset to have the best light of the Matterhorn... It is better to go from Monday-Friday because Saturdays and Sundays are very packet.
It is often windy so not always will get the peak reflection on the lake (as it happened to me that day of this picture:D)

Travel Information

You get there from Zermatt via cable car and then hiking a bit (a bit steep at some moments) but all rewarded!

The lake in the picture is Stellisee Lake. You can hike from Zermatt (which i would recommend, its a 2.5 hour hike up and 2 hours down) or you can take the gondola.

A beautiful spot, but what is the point of posting it here without location info?

I agree! Would like to go there but what's the point of placing it on Locationscout without info on how to get there.

Great Scenery! Is camping allowed in CH? (If only for a night) :-)

Great location. The large rock on the left including its reflection steals the show.

Is it legal to bring your tent up there?
Caetano Chappuis
Caetano Chappuis 27.04.2017
Yeah it is. In Switzerland it's allowed to camp anywhere above 2000 m.. the see it's about 2300m high. I did camp there and nobody had complained about it. Be aware that the nights are freezing:-) Have fun

Caetano Chappuis 27.04.2017
Sorry also forgot going higher than 2800 m is forbidden at Zermatt... you could be fined up to 5000 swiss francs :-( just keep that in mind

Thanks for the info. I rechecked with the official Zermatt page, there they say it's not allowed. http://www.zermatt.ch/Media/Artikel/Freies-Campieren I'm confused

Yeah me to know...I campt there and there was like 10 other people camping there also.. probably you need to buy a permission... I will check more about it and tell you later..... sorry for the confusion

So .... After a lot of research on this topic, I found out it's actually forbidden to camp at stellisee, but they can tolerate it. The Alternative is to stay at the hotel up there. It's a very nice one and not far at all from the Stellisee (3min walk). Or you can ask for an Authorization under: Zermatt Tourismus Bahnhofplatz 5 Postfach 247 3920 Zermatt Tel. +41 (0)27 966 81 00 Fax +41 (0)27 966 81 01 [email protected] So I have camped there and didn't have any problems (there was like 10 other people also camping). So I think it's camping under your own risk not getting caught. I hope I could help you

Even if the answer comes a year later. The double entry of the spot indicates that it is not possible. Read it here: https://www.locationscout.net/switzerland/5232-the-chocolate-mountain

I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, I haven't even made it to Zermatt yet. But it's relatively high on my list. I hope you had a nice time around there. I also want to see the glacier in Zermatt.
