Switzerland Klein Wellhorn & Rosenlaui Schlucht
This is atop the Rosenlaui Gorge, a deep and narrow gorge formed by the meltwater of the Rosenlaui Glacier, accessible by a 500 m footpath. Many Tolkien-esque images everywhere you look. Gnarled trees, jagged peaks and otherworldly-looking wildflowers make this a unique location. Did I mention the glacial gorge yet?
Photography Tips
As a beginner, be sure to take a long lens with you on rainy days. Shooting through thick fog with a wide-angle lens doesn't do it justice, but a lens in the 70-200 range does. This works by shooting through layers upon layers of moist atmosphere. And with those jagged peaks cutting through the distant fog, you're sure to return with images straight from Tolkien's books!
Travel Information
I was surprised that it can be tricky to get there even in May. Meltwater, snow patches and avalanches make it a pretty dangerous location to shoot in April and May, but you're good during the high season. The thing is though; this is a tourist attraction. Expect many people in the gorge in June through September. Going there off-season? Trekking poles, plenty of water and a couple of snacks are what you should bring as you can easily spend a full day there.
