This spot is officially called "Surprise View" and it does indeed offer a beautiful view over Derwentwater towards the town of Keswick. For most of the day the sun will be behind you so it makes it easier to photograph.

Autumn is nice, but also Spring when there is still snow on Skiddaw mountain.

There is a narrow road that leads up here, past the well known Ashness Bridge. There is (paid) parking right next to the spot.
