The Cathedral is situated in an area of the city that has some wonderful old parts still intact. It was completed in 1145. Some of it was rebuilt in the late 1400s to repair damage, some the result of a fire when it was struck by lightning.

The interior of the church features an amazing arched ceiling and an organ that is played a lot. The whole structure is well preserved but obviously very old. You’ll probably be there for hours (I was).

The Cloisters really are worth exploring. It is considered one of the world's greatest medieval treasures. If you look up, you’ll find that some of the points where the ribs of the ceiling join (bosses) are ornately carved. Each is the personal work of a medieval craftsman who was probably thanking God for having survived the Black Death.

One of the gates, the Ethelbert gate into the complex, built on the orders of King Henry III as part of the city's atonement for riots which destroyed parts of the church, features an armed person and a dragon either side of the arch – I got just one passing shot before the gates shut for the night.

Photography Tips

This is a busy place, so you need to arrive just as it opens and work fast. I didn’t so I got fewer clear shots than I wanted. Take a tripod and a wide-angle lens for interiors.

Explore the area – there is a lot here for a photographer.

Travel Information

There are regular trains from London Liverpool Street station. It took me 20 minutes to get from the station to the Maid’s Head hotel beside the cathedral (its worth staying and exploring the city for a day or more).
