United Kingdom Elm Hill, Norwich

This area dates back to the pre-1600s when the street was lined with merchant’s (skilled European refugees) houses, many with small factories and worker accommodation behind and jetties on the rivers to allow wares to be shipped out to a nearby port. It had become a slum by the early 1900s and was almost demolished by the City Council but the vote to preserve it was one by the Mayor’s casting vote (according to an old lady I spoke to while exploring the area).

Now, it is often used as a film location. It was used for part of the 2007 film, Stardust (yes, worth seeing) and in 2019 by Netflix for Jingle Jangle.

Don’t bother rising early in the morning hoping to get clear shots: locals seem to use it as an overnight car park. Explore the area and read the signs to find out about the history of some of the buildings.

Great area to take a long or medium lens.

This street is very close to Norwich Cathedral. There is parking in the area and it's walkable with a camera bag from the train station. You can also get to Elm Hill by bus.
