United Kingdom Salt's Mill & Leeds & Liverpool Canal
This is an attractive, accessible view of Salt's Mill - a well-preserved Victorian industrial building that's now galleries and shops (on the left) and apartments (on the right). The Mill sits on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal and within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire, which has contemporaneous cottages, a town hall and college, an unusual church and a park with bandstand. The whole area has lots of photographic potential.
Photography Tips
This spot is best at sunrise on a still morning so that reflections can be exploited (it's also quieter!). The Victorian sandstone buildings pick up morning or evening light well, and can look dramatic when lit against a dark sky. The canal towpath can be busy during the daytime and at certain times of day / year the sun can be blocked by the high buildings.
Travel Information
Saltaire can be reached by train from Leeds or Bradford, or by car. Parking is available in the village but is limited, and many streets require parking permits. This spot is within five minutes' walk from the train station. The towpath is fairly level and is accessible for wheelchairs and people with limited mobility.
