United Kingdom Eden Project
The Eden Project is a botanic garden in Cornwall, England, near St Austell. The facility was built on a former mine that had extracted clay on this site for over 160 years. The two greenhouses, which contain different climatic zones, are currently the largest in the world. They each consist of four geodesic domes. The facility was designed in 1995 by the British architectural firm Nicholas Grimshaw. The structural design was by Anthony Hunt. The greenhouses were built by the company Mero. The domes are covered with double-skinned, predominantly hexagonal plastic cushions. The column-free roof structure of the domes spans an area of 23,000 m² with a height of up to 50 m and a diameter of up to 125 m. The Eden Project opened to the public on March 17, 2001.
