Blackness Castle is located near the village of Blackness on a promontory in the Firth of Forth. The castle's shape is reminiscent of a ship, hence its nickname: "The Boat That Never Sailed." The castle was built around 1440 by the Crichton clan, one of the most powerful clans in the region. In 1453, George Crichton presented the castle as a gift to King James II of Scotland. King James V expanded the castle into a fortress between 1537 and 1543 as protection against the English. Blackness Castle was besieged several times over the next 100 years but never captured. It was not until 1650 that Oliver Cromwell and his troops successfully captured the fortress. In the 18th century, the castle served as a prison for prisoners of war from the wars against Spain, France, and the United States. The castle remained in use until the 20th century, most recently as an ammunition depot from 1870 onwards. During World War I, troops were stationed at the castle. After the war, Blackness Castle was given over to conservation and is now a tourist attraction.
